We are excited to announce the publication of the DGGF Climate Portfolio Assessment. This study reveals the impacts of climate change on businesses and societies in developing nations, highlighting issues such as food insecurity, biodiversity loss, economic instability, and livelihood vulnerability. It also identifies opportunities for cost reduction, energy access, business optimization, and improved access to capital.

Dutch Good Growth Fund – Financing Local SMEs (DGGF) is committed to supporting its investees in mitigating climate impacts and adapting to climate change, while promoting entrepreneurship in frontier markets. The climate portfolio assessment involved four DGGF investees and 13 of their portfolio companies, identifying climate risks, needs, and solutions for effective climate business development and financing in the SME sector.
Key takeaways
- Fund-level climate maturity is generally low, but awareness of climate change and appetite for TA support is high.
- Significant business development support (BDS) is required to enhance greenhouse gas and climate risk management in portfolio companies. Impacts are already materializing.
- Selection of technical assistance and BDS will require consideration of participant needs, capacity and maturity ahead of application.
- BDS should be aimed at portfolio companies with relevant business needs and/or investor requirements and the interest and capacity to be involved. Geography, sector and stage of investment will be important factors too.
